AHA Annual Meeting in Opelika

The 77th Annual Meeting will take place April 9-11, 2024 in Opelika. Details for the annual meeting—including paper presentations, keynote speakers, tours, and more—are available in the spring newsletter.

Wednesday, April 9 pre-meeting tours include the Penn Yonge House at Spring Villa and attractions at Municipal Park in Opelika. The Rocky Brook Rocket miniature train at the park will be available to ride from 3 to 4 PM. Local volunteers will lead walking tours of Courthouse House Square at 5:30 PM, followed by the opening reception at the Museum of East Alabama.

On Thursday, events include a local history presentation by Bert Harris, numerous paper presentations from historians around the state and region, and tours of historical sites in downtown Opelika. Thursday evening’s awards banquet will feature an address by Dr. Clayborne Carson, Jr., the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centennial Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. Friday’s session will include panels on public history, paper presentations on a variety of topics, and an address by AHA President Dr. Richard Bailey of Montgomery.

Sponsors for the annual meeting include the Baldwin County Department of Archives and History, University of Montevallo College of Arts & Sciences, Alabama Department of Archives and History, Alabama Humanities Alliance, Alabama Heritage Magazine, Alabama Folklife Association, and the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities at Auburn University.
