Annual General Meetingfollowed by a presentation on Temperance
by Linley Robinson
Wednesday 27 May, Starts 7.30pm. Doors open at 6.45pm for library, research, and chat.
From a Pub Crawl last year to Temperance this year!
Linley will describe the life of her 3x great grandmother, Rosanna, who overcame a poor childhood and early adulthood in London to become a stalwart of the temperance movement in Christchurch, NZ. After arriving in 1861, Rosanna was active in the Blue Ribbon Gospel Temperance Union, the Independent Order of Good Templars, the Christchurch Total Abstinence Society and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, among others. She and her husband ran various temperance establishments in Christchurch from the 1870s to the 1890s.
Papers Past has been a huge source of information (530 hits for “Mrs Lodge” in Canterbury, 95% of which are Rosanna), but many other sources will be described that have provided rich detail.
