About this Event

How can we best support older generations to live a healthy, happy life and feel connected to others? Join Cartwright Pickard and the Royal College of Art’s Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design as they present their findings from a two-year government-funded research programme to rethink the design of homes for later living.

By 2040, nearly a quarter of people in the UK will be aged 65 or over. In many other countries, such as the USA and Australia, one in twenty people live in a home that has been specifically designed to support the needs of an older person through the rest of their life. In the UK, this applies to only one in 200 retired people.

With a broad range of industry partners, the KTP research project combines expertise in housing, wellness, design, and technology, underpinned by evidence-based research into over 60 global exemplars, as well as feedback from residents themselves, to help the UK industry adapt to the changing needs of a more diverse population that is living longer. From this research, a set of design principles has been developed to provide a best practice framework that can be applied to improve the cognitive and sensory wellbeing of our ageing society.

A digital publication of our research findings and recommendations will be available to all delegates following the event.
