About this Event
IslandWood's trail systems will be open this day only for your self-guided exploration. Hike leisurely down the Spine Trail and traverse the ravine on a suspension bridge. How many species of ferns can you spot from the bridge? (our staff will have the answer!)
Meander through hemlock and red-cedar woods and make your way towards Mac's Pond to scout for ospreys and eagles. They love to soar overhead at this spot! Head up the Cemetery Trail and peek in the Mill Worker's Cabin or head south to explore the more elusive "Lower Loop Trail" full of mossy wonders, maidenhair ferns, and hooty owls. Heading back to campus, take the Spine Trail north and weave around the cattail marsh, stopping at the Bird Blind to observe waterfowl and other wildlife. Both treehouses and our Forest Canopy Tower will be open for your visit, too!
We'll have maps for you so you can find your way around and will be happy to suggest a route that is suitable for your family and abilities.
At this special event, we'll have our Ask the Naturalist table open again. Come say hello and visit with our educators! These nice folks will introduce you to the City Nature Challenge event taking place April 25-April 28th 2025 for Kitsap County. We'd love for you to participate while you're on-site! It's easy, and can be built in to your trail adventure.
If you've come before, we welcome you back again. There is always something new to see every season!
