In Afro connection dance and drumming, we explore the concepts of identity, creativity and authenticity through music and movement inspired by traditional West African rhythms. We feel the beat of the drums in our body, becoming one, connecting with our ancestral memory, coming back to roots and offering our dance as a celebration of communion with mother earth.

Meet Camila
Camila Chicon is an Afro dancer, therapeutic dance facilitator and a yoga teacher. Since 2012, she has specialized in traditional West African dance and rhythms. Since November 2017, she has lived in Waiheke Island where she has been working in her own dance approach combining different techniques of traditional African dance, conscious body training, improvisation, therapeutic dance, yoga and expressive movement.

Meet Ross
Ross began kit drumming at 8 and fell in love with rhythm. Since 2008 he’s studied traditional West African drumming with masters across Europe and in Africa. He’s lived in New Zealand since 2016, actively teaching, facilitating at festivals, and running drum camps. His classes are high-energy and joyful; yes, he loves fast tempos, but he’s patient and goes slow when learning new rhythms. With years of teaching, his sessions are accessible to all levels and ages, and his warm, encouraging style makes them memorable.
