SAXOPHONE SUZY (1928) [SAXOPHON-SUSI]Opening Night
New 4K Restoration
Introduction by film historian Farran Smith Nehme
Live musical accompaniment by Andrew Earle Simpson
The closest you will ever come to seeing a silent film musical, SAXOPHONE SUZY is a buoyant, high-spirited comedy that swings and practically dances off the screen. The story follows two Berlin girlfriends — an heiress (Anny Ondra) with dreams of the stage and a dancer (Mary Parker) yearning for an education — who swap identities on their way to London. Instead of arriving at a boarding school as her father wished, the heiress enrolls at the Tiller School for synchronized dancing. Cue mistaken identities, romantic mix-ups and eccentric dancing as a would-be suitor complicates matters further. This French-German flapper-era gem overflows with charm, energy and visual wit. Shot on location in Berlin, Paris and London, SAXOPHONE SUZY was so popular it was remade as a talkie just four years later. The radiant Anny Ondra — best known for her two films with Alfred Hitchcock and the production company she formed with her partner, director Karel Lamač — shines in one of her most delightful roles. DIR Karel Lamač; SCR Bobby E. Lüthge, Tom Maro, from the play by Hans H. Zerlett. France/Germany, 1928, b&w, 83 min. Silent with English intertitles. NOT RATED
