🇹🇭 👇🏻Aey the Ape returns to Smalls on May 3, joining the Frank Herrgott Trio for a night that brings together jazz, alternative influences, and reinterpretations of familiar songs.
The group features Frank Herrgott on piano 🎹, Shawn Kelley on drums 🥁, and Arnaud Francelet on bass 🎻 — three musicians whose backgrounds move between jazz, classical music, pop, and improvisation. Together with Aey’s distinctive voice, the night will move between intimate songs, open interaction, and unexpected turns.
🎤 Aey Kunjira – Vocals
Thai singer Kuljira Thongkong first became known to a national audience through The Voice Thailand Season 3, where she performed under the name “Aey the Voice.” Her version of “Piang Rak” by Silly Fools helped make her one of the standout singers of the season and placed her on Stamp Apiwat’s team.
Since then, she has continued building her own identity as an artist, more recently performing under the name “Aey the Ape.” The shift reflects a move away from being known only through television and toward creating a name and style of her own.
Outside television, Aey is also known as the vocalist of the experimental pop band Beagle Hug, whose music blends pop, alternative, and electronic influences. She has performed regularly at Smalls both as a solo artist and alongside visiting European jazz musicians including Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez and Jakob Dinesen, bringing that wider musical background into a more intimate jazz setting.
🎹 Frank Herrgott – Piano
Frank Herrgott is a French composer, pianist, producer, and educator based in Bangkok. A founding member of Jazz, What?, he moves easily between jazz, classical music, pop, and electronics, creating music that is often cinematic, melodic, and harmonically rich.
Originally from France, Herrgott later studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston before building his career in Paris as a composer, arranger, improviser, and producer. Over the years, he has collaborated with artists including Koh Saxman, Toon Bodyslam, Jennifer Kim, Stamp Apiwat, Burin Boonvisut, Boyd Kosiyabong, Room 39, and Ben Chalatit.
Alongside his work as a performer, Herrgott also composes original music and teaches. In recent years, he released his 24 Preludes for Piano in partnership with Yamaha Thailand and developed the Frank Herrgott Method, a piano approach focused on body awareness, emotion, and musical expression.
🥁 Shawn Kelley – Drums
Shawn Kelley is an American drummer and educator based in Bangkok. He has spent more than two decades in Southeast Asia and is considered one of the region’s most versatile jazz drummers. A graduate of The City College of New York, he studied under Ron Carter, John Lewis, and Sonny Igoe.
Kelley has performed and recorded with artists including Ernie Watts, James Moody, Toots Thielemans, Eric Marienthal, and Jeff Lorber. His playing ranges from subtle brushwork to stronger swing-driven performances, with a style built around attentive listening and responsiveness.
🎻 Arnaud Francelet – Bass
Swiss bassist and composer Arnaud Francelet was born in Freiburg and began playing music at a young age, first joining his brother’s band at 9. By the age of 12, he was already recording in the studio and writing his own compositions. After studying at the Bass Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, Francelet built an international career as both an electric bassist and double bassist.
He has worked across a wide range of settings, from duos and jazz groups to big bands, classical music and more electronic projects. Alongside his own projects, including Francelet/Moser and Volver, he has toured widely across Europe, the U.S. and Asia, performing in countries including Japan, China, India, Laos, Brazil and Thailand. He has also shared the stage with musicians such as Fred Wesley, John di Martino, Juan Munguia, Daniel Woodtli and Frank Herrgott.
