Advocacy 101 Information

This workshop introduces the starting points of advocacy, including how to identify the right decision-makers, tell a compelling story, and make a clear, focused ask for change. Participants will also learn practical strategies for preparing for meetings, communicating effectively, and following up to build momentum toward a more inclusive and barrier-free society.

Guest Speaker - Gift Tshuma, Advocacy Specialist, March of Dimes Canada

Gift Tshuma is an Advocacy Specialist at March of Dimes Canada and the primary point of contact for the Disability Advocacy Network, where he works to expand its reach and empower people with disabilities, along with their families & caregivers, to advocate effectively. Drawing on 17 years of experience in accessibility and disability rights, he champions inclusive systems across policy, education, technology, and the built environment.

His career is across various sectors, roles as an Assistive Technology Instructor at Independent Living Montreal, an Access Advisor at McGill University’s Office for Students with Disabilities, and later an Assistive Technology Specialist on March of Dimes Canada’s Tech for Good team. Beyond March of Dimes Canada, he holds positions at Tshuma Consulting, and Blurring the Boundaries. Gift is also a disability rights activist, accessibility consultant, and music composer. He has advised government, post-secondary institutions, and non-profits across Ontario and Quebec. In 2022, he received CBC Quebec’s Black Changemaker Award for his contributions to social justice and community empowerment.
