About this Event
Playwright Charles Evered concludes his 50-state reading tour of ADOPT A SAILOR here in Charlottesville.
Performed in Charlottesville by Ben Atkinson, Laura Heck, and Benedict Burgess.
ABOUT THE PLAY
ADOPT A SAILOR premiered in 2002 along with other shorts at Town Hall in New York City commemorating the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. It featured a rotating cast, including: Liev Schreiber, Neil Patrick Harris, Sam Waterston, Amy Irving, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson among others. It was then expanded and performed off-Broadway as well as venues abroad. The 2008 film version, which Evered adapted and directed, stars Ethan Peck alongside Emmy winners Bebe Neuwirth and Peter Coyote. It premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival as well as more than twenty additional film festivals before being picked up by Showtime, and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
ABOUT THE TOUR
Since 2018, Evered has traveled the country, holding readings of the play with different casts in each state to raise awareness and donations for Evered House.
Evered House is an artistic residency for veterans located in Port Haywood, VA. The program was dedicated in his father's name -- Charles J. Evered -- a World War II veteran who passed away in 1979.
The playwright also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 2000-2008, reaching the rank of Lieutenant.
