ADHD and Sex: Introducing ADHD and Sex to neurodivergent clients and their neurotypical partners
There is an interconnection between ADHD and sexual behaviors. This session is geared towards identifying the interconnectedness between ADHD and sex. In addition, we will introduce the concept of neurodivergent sexual therapy. If you are a health care professional and/or an ADHD coach, becoming a neurodivergent friendly professional is an essential part of providing mental health services. Considering the needs of neurodivergent clients by offering neurodivergent friendly treatment strategies ensures client-centered services and will lead to more impactful interventions for your clients.
We will discuss key elements related to ADHD and sex based on current research to better identify these concerns and assist your clients. If you work with neurodivergent people, this session is for you! Common ADHD struggles with sexuality include sensory issues, difficulties with interoceptive awareness, sexual impulsivity and difficulties with transitions. Most importantly, people with ADHD report having problems maintaining their attention during sex. These problems can impact sexual functioning. People with ADHD report having problems maintaining their attention during sex. Frequently noted are problems maintaining focus during sex, lowered sexual desire, hypersexuality, sensory issues as well as sexual dysfunctions and sexual impulsivity (Goldberg et al., 2024; Young et al, 2023; Korchia et al., 2022; Adbel-Hamid et al., 2021; Soldati, 2021; Soldati, 2020; Tuckman, 2019; del Mar Sanchez-Fuentes, Santos-Iglesias & Sierra, 2014). In addition, neurodivergent populations report lower sexual satisfaction and increased sexual distress (Jensen-Fogt & Pedersen, 2025; Goldberg et al., 2024; Young et al, 2023; Korchia et al., 2022; Adbel-Hamid et al., 2021; Soldati, 2021; Soldati, 2020; Tuckman, 2019; del Mar Sanchez-Fuentes, Santos-Iglesias & Sierra, 2014). Recent research continues to identify the importance of considering neurodivergence within sexual therapy practices (Jensen-Fogt & Pedersen, 2025). Neurodivergent aware practitioners are essential to the provision of effective mental health care. Join Dr. Piché to enhance your understanding of neurodivergence and it's impact on sex. Becoming a neurodivergent aware mental health professional is an important key towards improving services for all clients!
