Join us at Harper's Cafe every Sunday in May for some exciting history sessions where kids can learn and have fun at the same time!About this Event
Each Sunday in May 2026, we will be looking at a different period in Ashford's history.
- Week 1 (3 May)- Anglo - Saxons - Did you know that Anglo-Saxon items have been found near the park? We're taking a look at these items and creating our own Anglo-Saxon brooch and family crest (like local fraudster Edward Dering).
- Week 2 (10 May)- Medieval Ashford - Ashford was a medieval market town, let's learn what life was like for them and how they rebelled! We're looking at the types of jobs people would have worked here and preparing for the plague by making our own cure.
- Week 3 (17 May) - Witchcraft - We're considering why people were accused of being witches and looking at locals who were accused. We'll be learning about superstitions, making our own witchmarks and learning about local outspoken hero Reginald Scot.
- Week 4 (24 May) - Smuggling - What was it and why was it so popular in this area? We'll be learning about the different roles of a smuggler and who had the dangerous task of catching them. We'll be making smuggling rewards posters, making our own smuggling lamps and playing games to catch the smuggler.
- Week 5 (31 May) - Fortress Ashford - After the Dunkirk evacuation, the Nazis were swiftly approaching Kent, so what did we do to try to protect ourselves from invasion? We'll be training to become Home Guard and finding out the ways Ashford tried to protect its residents from what we thought was imminent invasion.
The sessions are only running once, so please check the week and date before booking the session you want, to avoid disappointment.
