Activism, Social Justice, and Jazz — Part II

Presented by Leimert Park Jazz Festival 360 and Dr. Ronald C. McCurdy, Professor of Music Studies, University of Southern California

Jazz has long served as a powerful vehicle for self-expression and a reflection of its times. Many of the genre’s most pioneering artists have used their platforms to address significant historical moments marked by marginalization, oppression, and brutality. Building on the program presented in May at USC, this event will feature Dr. Ronald C. McCurdy moderating a panel of esteemed scholars and jazz artists as they explore how jazz has been a powerful force in challenging and disrupting racism and inequality.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Jody D. Armour, Roy P. Crocker Professor of Law, University of Southern California
  • Capri Maddox, Executive Director/General Manager, L.A. Civil Rights Department
  • Dr. Eddie Meadows, Professor Emeritius, San Diego State University; Adjunct Professor, UCLA
  • Dr. Dawn M. Norfleet, Composer, Musician, UC Irvine Jazz Studies Faculty

Live performance by The Kenneth Brown Collective, playing selections from jazz artists who used their music to advocate for social justice and anti-racism.

Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a gathering that aims to inspire change through meaningful dialogue and the universal language of jazz.
