About this Event

Join us for this free acting intensive in New Milford, CT! Sponsored by Saint John's Episcopal Church in New Milford, CT.

Civic Method: Acting the American Memoir is a free acting workshop that blends art with a celebration, critique, and newfound search for a collective understanding around America's 250th Anniversary!

NOTE: You will not need physical or virtual tickets in order to attend this event. Registration is required to participate as there is limited capacity. Civic Method is an individual effort dedicated to strengthening citizenship in communities across the nation, while offering high-quality acting education for free/reduced cost.

In this acting workshop, participants are offered an immersive introduction to the principles of acting and storytelling. This is an opportunity for actors of all levels to flex their storytelling skills, while also collectively reflecting on the question 'Why is this work important now?' We will be reading influential speeches, letters, poems or archived materials.

Participants will be coached through the process of making personalized choices around difficult pieces of text that deepen their understanding of themselves, and perspectives outside their own. Every actor needs to learn how to make unique choices to authentically and with vulnerability connect to historical context, complex language, and characters that experience vastly different circumstances.

No prior acting experience is required! Bring your sense of play, imagination, and creativity as we explore ensemble work, read together, and answer the question 'What is an American?'. Exploring the use of acting methods to craft meaningful monologues, we will authentically communicate our classmates lived experiences as Americans through memoir. Embodying experiences different from our own is highly encouraged in this workshop and participants will emerge with an empathetic understanding and appreciation for a diversity of experiences.
