A classic of the noir genre, Fred Zinnemann’s (From Here to Eternity) Act of Violence was also one of the first American films to address the issue of the psychological struggles of soldiers returning from the war. Zinnemann’s masterpiece follows war veteran Frank Enley (Van Heflin) who’s haunted not only by deep psychological scars but by a living, vengeful comrade (Robert Ryan) who stalks Enley from coast to coast, refusing to forgive his betrayal in their Nazi POW camp. Also starring screen legends Mary Astor and Janet Leigh. (USA, 1949, 82 mins, English & German | Dir. Fred Zinnemann)
