Acorn Day is returning to the State Indian Museum in Sacramento for another fun day of demonstrations, arts & crafts, educational booths, guided tours of the park, and more! Fall is the best time for harvesting acorns, a culturally significant traditional food staple for California Native peoples since time immemorial.
This year's celebration takes place on Saturday, October 19th - from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm - and features educational booths from the Maidu Museum and Historic Site, Chaw'se Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, and more!
Join us to learn all about the process of turning acorns into food with California Native cultural practitioner, Diana Almendariz, and her family. Participants can grind acorns with a mortar and pestle and see how acorn flour is cooked using hot stones.
In addition, Dixie Rogers and other members of the California Indian Basketweavers' Association will provide ongoing basket-making demonstrations throughout the day.
This is a FREE public event that takes place outside of the State Indian Museum. There is a separate charge to visit the museum.
