The Investigations Team of the Syrian British Council, in partnership with Amnesty International, is honoured to invite you to "Achieving Justice in Syria: Challenges and Opportunities for the New UK Government," scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 30th, at the Amnesty International headquarters in the United Kingdom - London, at 6:30 PM.

This event will highlight the ongoing efforts to achieve justice and prevent impunity for crimes against humanity, with focus on SBC Investigations Team’s latest report "Militia on Campus: Crimes of the National Union of Syrian Students at the University of Damascus. Additionally, the event aims to deliver a clear and strong message from the speakers that Syrians are united in their struggle to achieve justice, emphasising the significant role the international community, especially the new UK government, can play in supporting these efforts. The event will also introduce the Investigations Team as a key partner in international accountability processes.

Key Speakers:

Dr. Yaman Al-Qadri: Is a clinical psychologist working at the National Health Service (NHS) with children, families, and the Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) with refugees and survivors of torture. She started her medicine degree at Damascus University in 2011-12, before being arrested for political activism. After leaving Syria in 2012, she was vocal about her experiences with the Syrian regime and its treatment of political prisoners. She pursued her studies in Montreal and London, and obtained a doctorate in clinical psychology from University College London (UCL). Yaman is a survivor of detention and torture on behalf of the National Union of Syrian Students.

Dr. Yasmine Nahlawi: (PhD Public International Law, Newcastle University) is a legal consultant with a focus on international legal mechanisms and processes pertaining to the Syrian conflict. She has led the Syrian British Consortium’s Investigations Team since 2019 and is also a co-founder of Adalaty, an organisation which elevates the voices and experiences of Syrian women to impact and lead on the understanding and delivery of justice. She has published widely on Syria, including her book ‘The Responsibility to Protect in Libya and Syria: Mass Atrocities, Human Protection, and International Law’ (Routledge 2020), and is the principal author of SBC Investigations Team’s report, "Militia on Campus: Crimes of the National Union of Syrian Students at Damascus University,".

Fadel Abdul Ghani: is the founder and Executive Director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), which he established in June 2011. He holds a Master's degree in International Law (LLM) from De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.In recognition of his tireless efforts in human rights advocacy, Mr. Abdulghany was awarded the prestigious 2023 Franco-German Prize for Human Rights.

Mazen Darwish: is a Syrian lawyer and human rights defender, graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Damascus. He holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from ESJ de Paris. Elected as a Commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists, Darwish has received over 12 international awards for his relentless defence of human rights. Despite being arrested multiple times in Syria for his activism, subjected to torture, and enforced disappearance, he has made significant contributions to various international legal and electoral committees.

Emma Beals (Session Moderator): is an independent foreign policy consultant with a focus on conflict, peace, and aid. She is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Middle East Institute and a Senior Advisor at the European Institute of Peace. Between 2012 and 2022, her work focused primarily on the conflict in Syria.
