10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. | Nowashe Village & Wood Memorial Library & Museum
Travel back in time with Nowashe Village to the Woodland Period of Connecticut, when Indigenous Peoples began to rely more on an agricultural way of life. Gain first-hand insight into everyday village domestic life and enjoy hands-on exploration of native regalia, pelts, Wampum, and other cultural objects. Learn about the traditional foodways of the Indigenous Peoples of the Northeast with hands-on activities like corn pounding.
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. | Guided Gallery Conversations and Symbolic Self-Portrait Workshop with Artists Tlisza Jaurique and Marcus Zilliox
Artists Tlisza Jaurique and Marcus Zilliox will use the NBMAA collection as a springboard for definitions of America, Americans, and American Art in their lecture "Natural Land Cultural Space: Untangling the Roots of American Identity Through an Art Historical Lens."
In the second half of the program, participants will be invited to join in a self portrait project in mapping identity. Using varying concepts of Land, participants will discuss and define their own cultural and historical natural space, and the way it helped shape who they are and what they believe. Create a paper mosaic in this guided activity inspired by Justin Favela’s "Mexican Landscape (after Doris Rosenthal)."
1-1:30 p.m. | Guided Gallery Activity (Family Tour)
Join one of our curators on a guided conversation and activity while looking at Ralph A. Blakelock’s "The Hunter." Visitors will share their observations and think about possible stories based on what they see in the painting.
