Hop on your bicycles, scooters, or BayWheels to tour three recent mixed-use developments with David Baker Architects. Mason on Mariposa, Potrero 1010, and 855 Brannan each integrate new homes and businesses, provide public open space and promote neighborhood connectivity, and take a sensitive approach to bringing density to the SOMA and Potrero neighborhoods.
Altogether, these projects are home to almost 1,200 families and individuals in a mix of affordable and market-rate apartments. This relatively flat 1.1-mile bike ride will include three property visits and provide insights into how community outreach shaped each project, how the designs balance density and livability, and how carefully designed open space and active ground floors can improve the lives of residents and neighbors.

David Baker, FAIA, is the founder of David Baker Architects, an architecture and urban design firm known for exceptional housing, creative site strategies, designing for density, and integrating new construction into the public realm. An industry leader in urban housing design, he has guided and overseen the design of more than 15,000 homes, including the mixed-use communities on this tour. David is a longtime urban cyclist and cycling advocate and leads architectural bicycle tours to engage participants with city biking and how housing design can reinforce the urban fabric, elevate neighborhoods, and uplift communities.
Stephen Doherty, AIA, David Baker Architects, Associate is a Bay Area native and architect with more than 20 years of local design and construction experience, including affordable, market-rate, and modular housing. Stephen led construction administration for Potrero 1010, a micro-neighborhood completed in 2016 that features two distinctive buildings flanking a newly created 1-acre public park integrated into the base of Potrero Hill.
Won Young Kim, David Baker Architects, Associate is a skilled architectural designer and project manager who has completed more than 1,000 affordable and market-rate multifamily housing units in California. His most recent project, 555 Larkin—a collaboration with TNDC—is under construction and soon to bring 108 new affordable homes to the Tenderloin. Won oversaw the development and construction of 855 Brannan, a 449-home mixed-use community completed in 2018 that features a highly active ground level rich with resident amenities open to the larger neighborhood.
