Award winning Uilleann piper and flautist Calum Stewart has a powerful and lyrical playing style which is rooted in the traditional music of his native Northern Scotland, and collaborations between the Scottish and Irish traditions. He is joined by Luc McNally (bouzouki), a formidable force in the Scottish traditional music scene and percussive Scottish step dancer Sophie Stephenson, whose percussive steps underpin the rhythms of the traditional dance tunes. The result is a vibrant and dynamic trio.
Hailing from Fort Augustus, Sophie's passion for the traditional arts is rooted in her Highland upbringing and participation in cèilidh dances, music sessions and local fèisean from a young age. With an academic background in ethnology, Sophie has a deep-rooted respect for the tradition bearers and the historical context of the Gaelic culture in which music, song, dance, story and community were all so interconnected. While combining old and new steps, within her own style, Sophie brings a fresh and vibrant vitality to the music.
"The collective energy between the Calum Stewart Band and Sophie Stephenson elevated the performance to new heights. Feeding off each other’s energy and engaging with the audience created an immersive experience." (Cara MacDonald, Celtic Connections Review)
The trio will be playing music from Calum’s most recent albums ‘True North’ (2023) and ‘Tales from the North’ (2017) to bring together traditional melodies and lyrical compositions, inspired by the landscape and heritage of Calum’s native North of Scotland.
