About this Event

Part of Theatreship's guest curated nights - where contemporary artists take over the ship to highlight the stories they want to tell.

Tonight Theatreship's favourite cellist/performer/artist Abi Asisa returns to present the seventh edition of Sapphic Movie Nights (on a boat) - with an exciting live Q&A!

Here's some more info from Abi:

BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER, 1999

Theatreship and Abi Asisa present SAPPHIC CINEMA – an event dedicated to highlighting FLINTA (femme, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans) stories within queer cinema.

Director: Jamie Babbitt
US, 1999, 85 min
Rating: 15

ABOUT THE FILM

Megan (Natasha Lyonne) sees herself as a typical American teenager: a strong student, dedicated cheerleader, and dating the captain of the football team (though her feelings for him are lukewarm). As such, she's shocked when her parents decide she's gay and send her to True Directions, a strict conversion camp designed to change her sexual orientation. There, she meets Graham (Clea DuVall), a confident and unapologetically rebellious lesbian. Despite her confusion, Megan finds herself drawn to Graham in ways she hadn’t expected.

Along with the film, there will be a live Q&A with Shaniya Odulawa.

Shaniya Odulawa is a recent politics and international graduate whose interests include but are not limited to theology, pop culture, secondhand clothing and queer liberation theory. She is also a freelance journalist published by the Guardian and you’ll find more of her musings on Substack  @shanstacked.

Doors open at 5pm for drinks in the bar.

Due to the historic nature of the ship, we’re sorry to say there is not currently step-free access into the theatre space.
