SCHEDULE:
7pm: A Brief History of Abbey House
The evening begins with 'A Brief History of Abbey House' with Francis Thyer. Learn the history of the house overlooking the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, from its construction in 1829, through ownership by several local families, its time as a retreat house for the diocese, up to the present day where it functions as part of the Glastonbury Abbey estate.
8pm: Intermission (refreshments available)
8:30pm: The Austins & Australia
After the intermission, join us for ‘The Austins and Australia’ with Nic Phillips. James Austin and his family owned the house and grounds of Glastonbury in the second half of the 19th century. But how did they build their wealth? The answer lies on the other side of the globe in the first settlements of Australia…
Please note, entry to this event is from Chilkwell Street, not via Glastonbury Abbey. Postcode BA6 8DH. Disabled parking only is available at the house. The nearest car park is Silver Street.
