A New Year’s Day Gathering by Mixtape Sapphics

There’s something powerful about how you begin a year.

A Warm Beginning is a New Year’s Day day party designed to help us start the year connected, energized, and inspired — a space to ease in, catch up, reflect if you want, and celebrate together as the day unfolds.

A few years ago, I began opening my home on New Year’s Day as an open house — a way to fill the first day of the year with connection, warmth, and joy. This year, we’re doing it Mixtape style.

This is a cozy-to-joyful gathering created for queer women and sapphics 35+ who want something more intentional than New Year’s Eve and more celebratory than staying home. Come solo or with friends. Arrive early, arrive late, stay all afternoon, or just drop in — this is a day meant to flow.

The afternoon will unfold in two chapters:

12:30–2:30 PM
A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with a softer playlist — perfect for conversation, settling in, reconnecting, and easing into the year.

2:30–6:00 PM
DJ VVS takes over, lifting the energy into a full day party — dancing, celebrating, and welcoming the year together.

We’ll have brunch-style bites available throughout the early part of the event, catered by Linc’s Café Catering — meant for grazing, sharing, and lingering (not a full plated brunch).

Included bites will feature small, bite-size servings such as:

• Tea sandwiches
• Focaccia
• Whipped goat cheese cups with prosciutto & honey
• Tiramisu cups
• And possibly a few additional items

This offering is designed to feel generous but light — something to enjoy while you connect, sip, and settle in.

Spark Social will be open throughout the event with:

• A full coffee bar
• Boozy and non-boozy cocktails
• Additional food items available for purchase, including paninis and grilled cheese

Come hungry, linger, sip something warm (or bubbly), and make yourself comfortable.

For anyone feeling reflective or creative, there will be a casual vision board station available throughout the day. No facilitation, no pressure — participate as much or as little as you’d like.

I’m Brazilian American and wanted to bring a bit of my culture into this gathering. In Brazilian New Year’s tradition, people wear specific colors to symbolize what they’re calling in for the year ahead (traditionally worn at midnight on New Year’s Eve). You’re invited to lean into this tradition — or interpret dress for the year you want in your own way.

Color Meanings:

• White (Branco): Peace, renewal, spiritual cleansing
• Yellow (Amarelo): Wealth, prosperity, success
• Red (Vermelho): Love, passion, romance
• Pink (Rosa): Love, tenderness, connection
• Green (Verde): Health, hope, growth
• Blue (Azul): Calm, harmony, emotional balance
• Orange (Laranja): Creativity, confidence, professional success
• Purple (Roxo/Violeta): Inspiration, intuition, spiritual connection

That said — dress for the year you want.
Sporty year? Athleisure.
Soft year? Cozy layers.
Bold year? Dress to the nines.
There’s no wrong interpretation.
