The Preservation of Jazz proudly presents The Summer Kickoff: A Tribute to Jazz & Poetry, an elegant evening celebrating the beautiful connection between jazz music, spoken word, storytelling, and artistic expression at Aretha's Jazz Café.
Featuring Sky Covington and Club Crescendo, this intimate summer production will showcase some of the greatest jazz songs ever written alongside original poetry and spoken word selections performed by Sky Covington.
Before becoming widely known for her celebrated jazz tributes and performances, Sky Covington first emerged as a poet and spoken word artist. Early in her artistic journey, she traveled performing poetry throughout cafés, cultural spaces, and underground artistic communities, becoming known for blending rhythm, storytelling, emotion, and truth into her work. She has long considered herself a jazz poet at heart.
While her career evolved deeply into jazz vocal performance, poetry never left her artistry. This special production marks a return to her roots — bringing jazz poetry back to the stage and weaving spoken word into the live jazz experience in a powerful and intimate way.
The evening will feature:
Classic jazz standards and timeless favorites
Original poetry and spoken word performances
Live music by Club Crescendo
Musical storytelling and intimate reflections
A sophisticated summer evening celebrating culture, creativity, and artistic freedom
In addition to the concert experience, the evening will also serve as the official CD release party for Love Letters to Yah, produced by AJ Garner.
The project features original poems written and performed by Sky Covington and reflects a deeply personal artistic and spiritual journey through music, poetry, reflection, and expression. Copies of the CD will be available during the event.
“This show represents two great loves of mine — jazz and poetry,” says Sky Covington. “Before many people knew me as a jazz vocalist, I was a poet. Jazz and poetry belong together, and I’m excited to bring that energy back into my performances in a deeper way.”
Known for her acclaimed tributes to Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, and other legendary artists, Sky Covington continues to create productions that preserve jazz culture while honoring the storytelling traditions deeply connected to the music.
