Background: A trafficking survivor’s prior history of severe abuse and complex trauma present unique challenges to attorneys and presiding judges.

Training Details:

Receive practical insights into establishing rapport with the survivor witness or client and understanding survivor behavior in court.

Practical tips and practice methods will be provided for handling each phase of the proceedings including:

  • asking effective initial interview questions for confirming and/or identifying a trafficking survivor and his or her history of trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation;
  • Understanding and managing survivor emotions and/or your own throughout the proceedings;
  • exploring and implementing special defenses in the criminal defense context;
  • locating supportive resources for the survivor before, during and after the proceedings and
  • pursuing post trial relief.

Perspectives will be presented from attorneys on both sides of the aisle along with the bench, survivor advocates and survivor advocacy groups to help you more effectively handle your role regardless of which role you may be playing in relation to the survivor.

This training event is designed for defending or prosecuting attorneys of a survivor of human trafficking in a criminal proceeding or other legal matter; for those prosecuting a human trafficking perpetrator with a survivor as a witness; or those presiding over a motion and/or trial wherein a human trafficking suvivor is a witness or a defendant.

CLE credits are pending approval.
