MATTHIEU CHAZARENC
CANTO III
ALBUM RELEASE ON BONSAÏ MUSIC
FEAT: Laurent Derache-Sylvain Gontard-Christophe Wallemme
With this new opus, jazz drummer and composer Matthieu Chazarenc continues to delve further into the world he started exploring in his first two albums Canto (2017) and Canto II (2021). The result is one of a subtle blend of cinematographic inspirations, traversed by classical, Latin but also Gascogne influences. An accomplished melodist, Matthieu manages to convey atmospheres that are sometimes nostalgic and melancholic, and sometimes lively and swirling but always delightfully intoxicating.
Parisian by adoption and at the head of his quartet Canto, the jazzman has kept his compass oriented to the south. Indeed, at the heart of Canto III resonate influences from the South of Spain, the Mediterranean, South America and last but least, the motherland of his southwestern French heritage.
Roots are obviously at stake in his new compositions as they provide a firm anchorage into the land and a sturdy base from which to rise but also as they require protection and preservation. This need for authenticity and integrity is best expressed by Matthieu’s wish to favor the natural timbre of the instruments and their ability to deliver both pure and acoustic tonalities.
To go on his south-bound journey, Mathieu can count on his trustworthy companions Christophe Wallemme on double-bass, Sylvain Gontard on the bugle and Laurent Derache on the accordion. Performing together in the course of numerous concerts and tours since 2017, they have built a great rapport and have reached an idiosyncratic musical identity that can be felt at every single concert. Each member of the quartet brings into play his own color and sound to better serve the original melodies composed by Matthieu.
To close this triptych, the musicians have invited distinguished guests who, in the span of a song, have lent their voices or instruments to join Canto in their musical journey.
Elegant, ebullient, and emotional, this third album by Canto reveals a wide range of musical colors, sublimated by the enthusiastic intensity of playing and performing together.
Canto III will be released on 26th January 2024 by Bonsaï Music.
