Zoot Suit, the iconic film that explores the struggles of Mexican-American youth in 1940s Los Angeles, will screen on Wednesday, October 9th at 6:30 PM at San Francisco’s 4 Star Theater, located at 2200 Clement St.This is the second special event in the ongoing Fogcutter Series, curated by Robert Mailer Anderson, who will also host the evening.
Special Guests for the event will include Daniel Valdez, the star of Zoot Suit, and Eugene Rodriguez, Founder and Director of Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy. Following the screening, the two will join a Q&A session to discuss the film’s enduring cultural impact and its relevance today.
Zoot Suit, directed by Luis Valdez, is based on real events and centers on Henry Reyna (Daniel Valdez), a Mexican American youth wrongfully accused of murder in a racially charged trial. The film, with its seamless blend of historical drama and musical fantasy, features El Pachuco (Edward James Olmos), a larger-than-life figure from Henry’s conscience who forces him to confront his identity and his future. Zoot Suit vividly dramatizes the events surrounding the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent Zoot Suit Riots of 1943.
Before the film, guests will be treated to a Gramophone Concert featuring deep 78 RPM cuts from the Zoot Suit soundtrack, including music by Lalo Guerrero, Trio Imperial, Cab Calloway, and other classic jazz and Latin artists. Daniel Valdez will assist Robert Mailer Anderson in DJing the rare, authentic tunes for this one-of-a-kind experience.
