Our walk follows the Hadrian’s Wall Path westwards passing the Poltross Burn milecastle, one of the best preserved on the wall, before descending to the remains of Willowford Bridge where the Roman Wall crossed the River Irthing and on to Birdoswald Roman Fort. The return route takes in Gilsland Spa, the Irthing Gorge and the C14th century Thirlwall Castle before returning to Greenhead, with a welcome cuppa in prospect.Dress for changeable weather and wear suitable footwear. Bring a packed lunch, snacks and a drink for the break.

From Newcastle take the A69 west for about 40 miles before turning right to Greenhead. The Tea Room is in the centre of the village. Please park on the roadside. (Hadrian’s Wall Bus stops here)
