a piECE of their mind: Proctor and Matthews Architects

In partnership with RIBA Sussex, we're proud to welcome Stephen Proctor and Andrew Matthews from Proctor & Matthews Architects to our studio for the latest 'A piECE of their mind' lecture.

A question originally posed by Gordon Cullen in 1974 is still a critical but neglected aspect of the current housing debate. Proctor and Matthews Architects' search for a narrative of place explores aspects of context in the pursuit of identity in the design of new neighbourhoods.

About Proctor & Matthews

Stephen Proctor and Andrew Matthews established the London-based studio Proctor & Matthews Architects in 1988. Together, they have created a distinctive approach to design underpinned by an investigation and analysis of the physical, historical, and cultural characteristics of place. Their work ranges from residential mixed-use neighbourhoods to visitor attractions, as well as educational, cultural, commercial, and community initiatives.

Stephen and Andrew have lectured and taught in schools of architecture across the UK and Europe and they both currently lead the Urban Design Module at the University of Cambridge. They are Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts and Stephen is an elected member of the Art Workers Guild. Additionally, they serve on design review panels throughout the UK, contributing to the development of well-designed spaces.
