About the Experience
We are organizing a fundraiser—and we'd love for you to be part of it.
Colors of Conservation is an immersive half-day experience brought to you by Dye it Yourself Workshop in collaboration with Akansha Modi and the Jaipur Virasat Foundation. We are aiming to collect INR 20,000, which will be used towards the cleaning and restoration of the very stepwell you'll walk through—helping return it to the living, breathing community space it once was.
Come for the craft. Stay for the cause.
Why This Matters
Stepwells—known locally as baolis—were once the beating hearts of communities across India. Sacred, social, and ingeniously engineered, many now lie neglected and forgotten. Money raised through this workshop goes into a dedicated fund to clean, restore, and eventually revive this piece of Jaipur's living heritage. By joining us, you're not just learning a craft—you're helping bring it back to life.
The Walk: Descent into History (30 minutes)
A stepwell heritage walk led by Akanksha Modi an interactive session to understand the traditional water conservation systems of community water supply systems before the tap water supplies came into existence also you'll learn about the architecture, the communities who once gathered here, and the restoration work your contribution is helping to make possible.
Session One: Shibori & Tie-Dye (1 hour)
Our master artisans will introduce you to Shibori—the ancient art of folding, twisting, and binding fabric to create stunning resist-dye patterns. After a demonstration, you'll tie your own fabric or garment, with personalized guidance throughout. No two pieces ever turn out the same.
Session Two: Natural Dyeing (1.5 hours)
This is where the magic unfolds. The fabric you tied earlier now meets color—natural dyes sourced from roots, flowers, bark, and minerals. Choose from several dye baths, experiment with color combinations, and discover how pH levels and fabric types create dramatically different results. When you untie your piece at the end, the reveal never gets old.
Two tea towels and a tote bag are provided, and you're welcome to bring up to 3 metres of your own fabric or up to 2 garments to dye on the day.
