Inspired by the exhibition Narrative Wisdom and African Arts, The Black Rep will perform The Secret Gallery: African Art Adventures, an original play by Naima Carter Russell and Eugene H. Russell IV, which explores Black art through the lens of live interpretation designed to develop young imaginations. The free performance is geared toward youth in grades 4 through 12; registration is required for school groups.About the performance
In the bustling city of St. Louis, a group of high school students find themselves on an extraordinary journey that will forever change their perception of art and the world around them. The stage is set at the renowned Saint Louis Art Museum, where their teacher, a passionate advocate for cultural exploration, has organized a field trip with a twist. As the students gather in the Museum’s grand entrance, their teacher lays down the rules: They are to explore the exhibits, immerse themselves in the artwork, and ultimately choose a piece that resonates with their personal experiences and identities. Little do they know, this seemingly straightforward assignment will lead them down a path of self-discovery unlike anything they could have imagined. Written by Atlanta husband and wife team Naima Carter Russell and Eugene H. Russell IV and featuring original songs, The Secret Gallery is a fun, humorous story about art’s ability to transcend boundaries and connect souls across time and space.
