Les Bostonades presents a lavish all-Bach chamber program featuring the violin, viola, viola ga gamba, and harpsichord. Bach’s Six Trio Sonatas for organ, believed to have been written as exercises for his son Wilhelm Friedemann, adopt the Italian trio sonata model, with two upper voices, each one played on its own keyboard, and a bass line played by the pedal. In this concert, Les Bostonades will interpret two of the trio sonatas in a collaborative ensemble setting. Bach’s Sonata no. 5 in C major has a touch of galant style; its second movement was often performed in between the Prelude and Fugue for organ in C major. In contrast, Sonata no. 6 in G major is thought to be an original work lacking material derived from earlier compositions.
We’ll also feature two works for solo instrument and obbligato harpsichord. The Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord in C minor is structured as an Italian sonata da chiesa with four movements of slow—fast—slow—fast. Rounding out the program is the Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord in G minor is in the style of a Baroque concerto. Join us in sampling these musical delicacies!
