About this Event
Presented by Gateway Performance Productions in Association with the Little 5 Points Community Center
Join Gateway Performance Productions' Irish mummer, Mike Hickey, for a festive celebration of the Old Irish New Year -- Samhain. Enjoy humor along with a bit of song and dance in a theatrical play created by Sandra Hughes. This comedy -- inspired by Ireland's masked mummer folk theatre tradition -- is repurposed by Sandra and Mike for 21st century audiences. The Irish once recognized only two seasons -- summer and winter. Samhain marks the close of the old calendar year as the final harvest and the bare beginnings of winter. It's a time to revel and honor ancestral memories. Similar celebrations continue in other cultures worldwide. For thirty years Gateway produced performances of traditionally masked Irish mummers and became recognized as active members of a folk tradition practiced for over 3,000 years. Founded by Sandra and distinguished by her own perspective, Gateway has toured her original mummer plays in replicas of traditional woven straw masks created by Mike. These performances have taken them throughout the United States, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Denmark. Sandra's mummer plays are housed in The Ohio State University Irish Collection as "works of significant cultural merit." Both artists performed other plays of Sandra's in Northern Ireland --commissioned from her over a six year period as part of a Peace and Reconciliation Project in Belfast in an area then known as "the M**der mile." Both claim Irish descent. Sandra is an Irish citizen.
