A Month of Queer Resistance Cinema: Milk (2008)🏳️🌈 Pride Month at TicTic - Celebrating Queer Cinema 🏳️⚧️
🗓 Thursday, June 4 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Directed by Gus Van Sant, Milk chronicles the life and political rise of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. Starring Sean Penn in an Academy Award-winning performance, the film traces Milk’s transformation from middle-aged outsider to pioneering activist as he mobilises San Francisco’s queer community during the 1970s in the face of institutional discrimination, police hostility, and organised political backlash.
Rather than framing activism as abstract history, the film focuses on coalition-building, community organising, and the emotional toll of visibility during a period of escalating social tension. Van Sant balances political momentum with moments of intimacy and vulnerability, creating a portrait of resistance rooted in solidarity and collective action. As part of TicTic’s Pride Month celebration of queer resistance cinema, Milk remains one of the defining political queer films of modern American cinema.
