Liberal democracy is in crisis, and authoritarianism is a growing political threat. But what is the progressive alternative? In his new book, Free and Equal: A Manifesto for a Just Society, Daniel Chandler argues that the ideas we need are hiding in plain sight, in the work of the twentieth century's greatest political philosopher, John Rawls. Taking Rawls's humane and egalitarian liberalism as his starting point, he builds a powerful case for a practical agenda that would protect fundamental freedoms, reinvigorate democracy, and transform capitalism as we know it.
In this book talk, Daniel Chandler explores how Rawls’s ideas can rehabilitate liberalism and provide the basis for a broad-based progressive politics that could see off the populist threat and transform our societies for the better.
Daniel Chandler, an economist and philosopher based at the London School of Economics, will be in conversation with Joshua Cohen, Apple University faculty, Distinguished Senior Fellow in Law, Philosophy, and Political Science at UC Berkeley, and co-editor of Boston Review.
This event is co-sponsored by the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society at Stanford University and Boston Review.
