About this Event
This workshop delves into the journey of Learning Stories in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The work is shaped by Te Whāriki, New Zealand's early years curriculum guidelines. These narratives include individual, community, home, family, welcome, and teacher stories. They celebrate collective experiences, engage families, honor children's voices, and build a reciprocal learning community, transforming children's lives.
The Power of Learning Stories to Transform
Learning Stories are not just about a single "learning story." They embody a whole philosophy of documentation. Here's a glimpse of the different types of narratives they include:
First, there are classic Learning Stories, which capture the unique journeys of individual children. Then, we have Group or Community Learning Stories, which celebrate the collective experiences within a group setting.
We also include Stories from Home, where families share their perspectives and contributions to their child's learning. We value Family Voice, providing a platform for families to express their insights and aspirations. This also helps engage parents in understanding the power of early childhood education. Of course, we also honor the most important voices of all—the Child's Voice. Their thoughts, ideas, and reflections bring these narratives to life. There are also Welcome Stories, which warmly invite children into the learning environment.
Let's not forget the dedicated teachers and educators—they have their own stories, too! Teachers' Stories reflect their personal lives and relationships, helping to build a stronger reciprocal community of learners. Teachers also write about each other in powerful, strength-based ways to celebrate their teaching lives.
So, learning stories are not just singular tales. They are a rich tapestry of narratives that weave together the voices and experiences of children, families, and teachers. Together, this documentation creates a comprehensive and vibrant picture that truly captures the essence of learning and growth. These Learning Stories have the power to transform children's learning lives.
