Working Together to Support the Arts and Students
The event also celebrates the enduring partnership between Opera San Jose, San José State University, and San José Woman’s Club to support the arts and students.
Opera San José was founded by Irene Dallis with a goal of serving as an incubator for emerging operatic talent and providing San José with a world-class opera company. San José Woman’s Club members, including Walda Bradley and past presidents Jeanne McCann and Alma Taylor have supported Opera San José since its inception.
Opera San José’s collaboration with the San José State University Vocal Scholar Program is a pipeline for future stars and a key benefit for students to practice and enhance their skills. And the organization has been a key partner in SJWC’s annual scholarship fund luncheon, providing performers, silent auction items and partnering in promoting the event.
The SJSU Vocal Performance Program, led by Dr. Luis Orozco, Director of The SJSU Opera Theater, provides students main stage opportunities to sing in Opera San José productions and enhance their learning through performance-a vital part of becoming an opera singer. These students include those vying for the SJWC Vocal Scholarship.
San José Woman’s Club has a long tradition of supporting San José State University students, both with scholarships and performance opportunities. SJSU members include many SJSU alumni.
The club first established a San José State University Scholarship fund in the 1940s and now provides academic scholarships to students who have demonstrated a commitment to broader social issues through the San José State University Alumni Scholarship Program, the largest alumni supported scholarship program in the California State University system, annually awarding over $240,000 in scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students.
The SJWC Vocal Scholarship was established in 2000 by Club President Alma Taylor. Each year, SJSU students compete in a live vocal competition for the scholarship. The scholarship winner is announced at the event and returns for a recital performance in the following spring. In addition to providing scholarships, SJWC has supported SJSU students by providing performance space for recitals, performances and practices.
