Our Summer of Love Series with Twelves continues. We at the Good Luck Vinyl Club are very excited to host a listening session for the debut, self-titled album by The Specials, hand-picked by the legendary Dennis Owens.Released in 1979 amidst the social and political turmoil of Thatcherite Britain, the album captured the raw energy and rebellious spirit of its time with its infectious blend of ska, punk and reggae. It spoke to the frustrations and aspirations of a large segment of multicultural British youth and sparked a movement that eventually spread worldwide and whose reverberations are still felt to this day, inspiring the likes of Fishbone, The Untouchables, No Doubt, Hepcat, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Tijuana No, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, The Toasters, The Slackers, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Sublime, the 3rd wave ska movement as a whole, as well as Owens’ first band, Long Beach’s own Suburban Rhythm.
Alongside the session we will be showcasing a live set by Jackie Mendez. Mendez is a vocalist & musician based in Los Angeles, California. She grew up listening to a wide range of music, but it wasn’t until her introduction to Ska and Punk, mainly the British 2Tone ska revival music of the late 1970’s where Jackie took the next step and started playing in bands. She developed a keen interest in 1960's era Jamaican Ska and Reggae influenced by singers from the likes of Alton Ellis and Ken Boothe.
Each Tickets Comes With Complimentary Cocktail By The Social List.
