About this Event

An Evening of Professional Development with the Museums of Mississauga

Teachers looking to increase their knowledge of the history of enslavement in Canada should not miss this private viewing of a brand new exhibition. A History Exposed: The Enslavement of Black People in Canada reveals the experiences of enslaved Black people in Canada through individual biographies and archival records. Learn how enslavement came to be in Canada and find out who Canada’s enslavers were.

Museum educators will guide teachers through the exhibition, highlighting content that can be shared back in the classroom, including:

· Global context of slavery in Canada

· Origins of enslaved Black people in Canada

· Identifying Canada’s enslavers

· Culture, work and experiences of enslaved peoples

· Biographies of individuals who were enslaved

· Legacies of slavery in Canada

Teachers interested in attending must register for a ticket through Eventbrite.

About A History Exposed

A History Exposed: The Enslavement of Black People in Canada is a travelling exhibition created by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in partnership with guest curator Dr. Afua Cooper and the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia.

This groundbreaking new exhibition will spend the next four years touring across Canada, and Adamson Estate will be its only stop in the GTA. To accompany this project, Museums of Mississauga have curated an exhibition on Mississauga's Black History to highlight local connections. We are thrilled to be able to cast light on some of the City's founding Black families and their incredible lives here, history that until recently has been largely unknown.

School Visits

Interested in bringing your students to the exhibition? The Museums of Mississauga have designed education programs linked to the curriculum for students in grades 6-12. Learn more about booking a school trip here.

The Museums of Mississauga in partnership with the Friends of the Museums of Mississauga gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Hazel McCallion Arts, Culture and Heritage Fund at the Mississauga Foundation, a registered charitable public foundation serving the people of Mississauga.

Please note: A History Exposed exhibition contains images and text describing violence endured by enslaved peoples and documents with racist and colonialist language. This content may challenge and disturb visitors. Adults with young children may wish to preview the exhibit beforehand.
