A Grain of Sand RevisitedMinnesota Chorale and A Thousand Tongues
ft. Adrianna Tam, Shohei Kobayashi, and Paolo Debuque
The Minnesota Chorale is joined by Adrianna Tam, Shohei Kobayashi, and Paolo Debuque (A Thousand Tongues) to present a concert examining Asian-American activism, solidarity, and identity formation. Despite centuries of Asian diasporic presence in the US, the term “Asian-American” was only coined in the late 1960’s, with the express purpose of fostering solidarity between pan-Asian activists amid a growing multi-ethnic struggle for self-determination across the country. Together, we will explore the history of that now-familiar term and consider the still-relevant lessons from our forebears through the lens of A Grain of Sand (1973), a seminal folk album of the early Asian-American movement.
