About this Event
What if you could take a piece of the garden home with you, not as a faded bloom, but as a feeling?
Join Paul Sanders of Discover Still for a unique, one-day immersive retreat within the sub-tropical soul of Trebah. This experience is a bridge between the wild, architectural beauty of the gardens and the quiet, grounding joy of creating a handmade book from the photographs you will make.
The Morning: The Art of Noticing We will walk slowly through the valley paths with a sense of "soft fascination." We’ll move past the postcard views to find the quiet poetry of the season:
- The prehistoric scale of the Giant Gunnera leaves as they filter the high summer sun.
- The intricate, lace-like patterns of the Tree Ferns against a bright Cornish sky.
- The hazy blues and vintage whites of the iconic Hydrangea Valley as it spills toward the Helford River.
- The rhythmic shadows cast by the Chusan Palms and the whispering Bamboo groves.
The Afternoon: The Art of Bookmaking In the quiet of our creative space, we transition from observing to making. You will learn to curate your favorite images from the morning and transform them into a beautifully hand-stitched book. Using traditional binding techniques, needle, and thread, you’ll create a tactile, physical vessel for your summer discoveries.
- Open to All: No technical expertise is required. Whether you use a DSLR or the smartphone in your pocket, the focus is on your unique perspective.
- An Intimate Circle: With only 8 spaces available, the day is designed to be calm, personal, and restorative.
- The Takeaway: You will leave with a bespoke, handmade heirloom—a bound collection of the beauty you found at Trebah.
English fine art photographer Paul Sanders has been involved in professional photography for over 35 years, first as a black and white printer, then as a fashion photographer.
An opening at a local weekly newspaper for a trainee photographer led to a career in newspaper photography, working at The Manchester Evening News, Reuters, and then The Times newspaper as Picture Editor, overseeing the entire visual content of the prestigious publication.
Paul’s approach to photography is one of mindful connection. After looking at nearly 20,000 images every day during his years at the Times, his own work is made in response to his emotional and spiritual reactions to the subjects he works with and reflect the sense of stillness and calm he feels whilst on with them
Moving from the south east to Cornwall and into a studio space at Krowji near Redruth has given Paul the space and peace that is reflected in his recent work..
Paul’s, beautiful, highly reflective work has been exhibited widely across the UK, Europe & Japan, his first book ‘Still: A Mindful Practice for Photographers’ will be published in February by Ilex and is available to preorder on many websites
