About this Event
On Tuesday 11th February join with forum+ for a conversation with Lisa Power, as she speaks about her life of campaigning and memories of activism in Camden and Islington.
Lisa Power
Legendary lesbian Lisa Power has been an LGBT campaigner for over four decades. In the 1980s Lisa lived in Camden and Islington, playing a key role in the area as it became an important battleground for LGBT+ rights. During that time she co-founded the Pink Paper and Stonewall, as well being a volunteer for the Lesbian & Gay Switchboard which was based at Housmans Bookshop in Kings Cross.
Lisa was the first openly LGBT person to speak on gay rights at the United Nations in New York and was Secretary-General of the International Lesbian and Gay Association. Today Lisa is an LGBT history consultant, sexual health campaigner and continues her great LGBT rights activism
Hemingford Arms
The Hemingford Arms is an Islington venue steeped in LGBT history. The pub opened in 1855 and is the oldest traditional pub in Barnsbury. The first floor function room where our event will be held was once home to the Icebreakers Friday-night disco in the early 1980's, a hugely popular disco which operated in tandem with the community services provided by Icebreakers. Islington and Haringey Gay Group also made the pub their home in the early 1980s, before moving to the Fallen Angel in 1989.
In the 1970s and 80s, the "Hemi" was a rare space where a variety of characters would gather. Lisa Power once described the Hemingford Arms as "a melting pot of everything disreputable. All the subterranean and anti-establishment groupings you could imagine - gays, lesbians drag queens, punks, new-romantics, hard-line politicos, anarchists - you name them and they would congregate at the Hemi, especially for the Friday night discos."
The Hemingford Arms continues to be a wonderful community pub for all in Islington and we’re very proud to be hosting our event at the “Hemi”.
forum+ is an independent charity working to promote equality for LGBT people in Camden and Islington. We host cultural events and social support groups which celebrate LGBT life in the local community and help to reduce social isolation and loneliness. We provide support services to LGBT+ victims of hate crime and work to improve community safety. forum+ is proud to curate the official programme for Camden & Islington LGBT History Month.
