In pop music, we have mashups and medleys, remixes and Love Story (Taylor's Version). In jazz, we have contrafacts and vocalese.
What does a singer do when they like a song a lot, but it's not quite written for a singer? Sing it anyway, and add their own lyrics - that's vocalese.
What does a composer do when they like a tune's harmony a lot, but have some of their own ideas too? Keep the chords, write a new melody - that's a contrafact.
This is an evolving project led by pianist Rachma Lim, with collaborative creative direction from vocalist Sarah-Kei Lauw and guitarist Ernest Tan. Join their band as they bring us through a series of musical changes, discovering familiar tunes re-imagined into something different. It’s a celebration of the thing that unites jazz musicians: the thrill of discovering something new, together.
They’ll be presenting some of their favourite tunes (that some may not have realised are contrafacts!) like More and Mo's, Out of Nowhere and Nostalgia. Look forward to vocalese from the original pioneers like Annie Ross and Eddie Jefferson, to today's stars like Veronica Swift and Samara Joy, and featuring some of Sarah-Kei's very own vocalese lyrics. It's sure to be a night of great fun and new surprises.
