Join us for an evening of dialogue and exchange, featuring Germans of various fields presenting on their career paths and current endeavors.
About this Event

Join the German Consulate Boston and the University of Rhode Island for an evening of presentations and networking.

Following the presentations, students in the IEP Program will be present to highlight their research and impressions from their time studying in Germany.

Speaker bios:

Patrick Buhr, Media Artist, Fellow, Rhode Island School of Design

Patrick Buhr is a filmmaker and experimental animation artist whose work blends comedic autofiction with absurdist surrealism, often through playful, multilayered storytelling. In addition to his film practice, he creates interactive media art that extends his exploration of narrative and form into digital environments.
Buhr studied philosophy at Humboldt University in Berlin and media art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. His short films have been presented at numerous international festivals, including Tampere Film Festival, Pictoplasma Berlin, Oberhausen, DOK Leipzig, Encounters Bristol, and Slamdance.


Stefan Fertmann, Director of Manufacturing, igus inc.

Stefan Fertmann recently began his role as Director of Manufacturing at igus, inc.'s USA headquarters in East Providence, RI. Prior to that, he served in various roles at igus' global headquarters in Germany.

Fertmann studied Mechanical Engineering at FH Münster and received a masters degree from the Technical University of Braunschweig. He also spent a year of study for his masters' degree at the University of Rhode Island through the International Engineering Program.


Susanne Menden-Deuer, Professor of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island, Graduate School of Oceanography

Dr. Menden-Deuer is a seagoing oceanographer and a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography whose research focuses on marine planktonic food webs. After receiving her Diploma from the University of Bonn, for research done at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar- and Marine Sciences in Bremerhaven, she moved to the US for graduate studies at the University of Washington. Her professional activities include research, mentoring and teaching oceanography and the many ways in which the ocean is highly relevant to sustaining humanity.
