A Breathwork Quest: Grounding

As the weather shifts to colder days and longer nights, we turn in and find comfort in our grounding practices.
For this we practice working with the first chakra, the muladhara chakra which is located at the base of the spine. “Muladhara” means root, and is associated with the earth element, linked to your ability to dig in and feel firmly rooted in your life. This wheel of energy (Chakra) is associated with your sense of security, familial relationships and your feeling of home. When energy is flowing through the first chakra, you feel firmly grounded in yourself and the world around you.
When the root chakra is out of alignment, you may experience:
-Weight gain
-Weight loss
-Constipation
-Pelvic pain
-Incontinence
-Increased distractibility
-Rushing from one task to another
-Feeling exhausted or lethargic
-Increased feelings of anxiety, stress or depression
-Feeling stuck
-Inability to take action
When you feel stressed or anxious due to a lack of Grounding, your breath naturally becomes shorter and more rapid. This shallow pattern of breathing only contributes to feelings of stress and anxiety, reduces feelings of grounding and centering and results in increased physical tension further. The Deep breathing exercises that we will practice in this class will help you achieve a greater sense of grounding and relaxation and act as an exercise to bring mindful long and slower breathing into your everyday life.
We will also enjoy a warming cup of ceremonial Egyptian Blue lotus tea. For over 3000 years the Blue Lotus was used by the priesthood of ancient Egypt for its medicinal properties and as a spiritual sacrament. Blue Lotus generally produces mild consciousness-expanding effects that are said to have a “divine” essence, which brings upon the feelings of tranquility and subtle euphoria.

For this class we ask that you do not consume caffeine for at least 2 hours, eat for at least 1 hour or drink for at least 30 minutes before practice. It is also best to empty bowels and bladder before practice as it is preferable not to have to get up during class.
After class we will provide delicious tea and snack to both rehydrate and ground you as you move back towards your evening.

What to expect-
-This practice is done in a comfortable reclined position.
-It is preferable to wear a sleep mask through the duration of the practice, this will help to enhance the outer body experience. One will be provided for you but you are also welcome to bring your favorite one from home as well.
-Though this class is a very deep meditative practice, the music played during may surprise and excite you. Music plays a big role alongside the rhythmic breath. The music will range in energy levels and volume to match the intention of the moment, heighten the energy of the practice, and add to the vibration and concentration.
-There will be approximately 30 minutes after practice to debrief, journal, and reflect. This will be an open discussion but sharing is not required.
What to bring-
-One or two of your favorite feel good blankets from home.
-A sleep mask or bandana
-Journal
-Wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing. No tight sports bras or elastic bands around your waist to allow freedom to breathe deeply.
-Empty bowels and bladders to be free of distractions.
