The Louis Moreau Institute for New Music Performance is celebrating twelve years of new music in New Orleans. This year’s festival will feature a new class of institute artists, including violinist Christopher Herz, violist Stephen "Adam" Savage, and cellist Olivia Marckx. They will be joined once again by the Institute’s Artistic Director, acclaimed pianist Wesley Ducote. The festival opens with a dynamic program that bridges musical traditions across the 20th and 21st centuries, featuring composers that reflect the Institute’s mission to celebrate a diverse array of voices in contemporary classical music, including works by Timo Andres, Alban Berg, Mario Davidovsky, and George Walker. Our Institute Artists will also be joined by special guest performers Oboist Virginia McDowell and violinist Cassidy Franzmeier of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, for Melinda Wagner's Scritch.
As is our tradition, both concerts will feature a group improvisation on a traditional New Orleanian song. This year’s festival will reimagine the quintessential Jelly Roll Morton song, Whining Boy.
