What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than to take your loved one to a live concert? Open your senses to new sounds and ideas.
This largely baroque event is brought to you by Hope Metropolitan Concerts' Orchestra - conducted by Stephen Pratt - and Singers - directed by Richard Lea.
It's a wonderful assortment of music including extracts from Lully's "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" arranged by Pratt. This is the incidental music from Moliere's mocking play which pokes fun at the would-be nobleman who's really only middle class.
Then there's Malipiero's "Vivaldiana". Born into the late 19th century, (1882), Malipiero lived into the vastly different late 20th century (1973). In his music he combined the present and the still earlier past, perhaps music he had enjoyed listening to in his youth, from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Add a recent composition - "Over" from local composer Robin Hartwell -; a "Magnificat" from Durante; some unaccompanied songs and - the main piece of the evening - Carulli's "Guitar Concerto" played by eminent performer Eleanor Kelly and you have an evening worth celebrating.
