A Bookworm in the Library
An illustrated talk by Stella Halkyard
Members' priority until 3rd November
In this illustrated talk archivist Stella Halkyard will read excerpts from her recent book Library Lives: a constellation of books and objects from the Rylands to plot her lifelong love of libraries.
By telling the life stories of one library’s hidden gems - a lock of Wordsworth’s hair, an ancient Egyptian papyrus, Mary Queen of Scots’ Book of Hours, Delia Derbyshire’s gas mask – she hopes to prompt the curious reader to take readerly and writerly adventures in libraries of their own.
After studying English at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, when she was a member of the Lit & Phil, Stella was inspired to spend a working life in libraries and archives, first at the Documentary Photography Archive in Manchester, then Manchester Public Libraries and finally at the John Rylands Library where she curated its Modern Literary Archives, Art, Photography and Object Collections for nearly thirty years.
Members' priority until 3rd November
