About this Event
Join The Explorers Club Portugal Chapter and Gonçalo J. Costa on this exclusive look into how insects can be part of the solution for a better society.
A better society. With insects. Sounds weird right? All you can think about is that annoying mosquito that bites you during the night, that wasp trying to taste your lunch, or those weird bite marks you got from petting a stray dog. But insects are much more than that, and contribute to colourful meals and clothing, your pet's food, your tasty snacks... and your makeup...?! We have been disconnected from these tiny, invisible heroes for a long time, and now, to address today's societal challenges, insects answer the call. In this talk, Gonçalo J. Costa will delve into the latest developments of the insect bioindustry and how we can best use insects as food, feed and much more.
Gonçalo J. Costa is a Portuguese entomologist that has been fascinated with insects ever since a young kid. Gonçalo started his career working with the discovery and protection of new cicada species from Morocco, becoming a National Geographic Explorer, following these noisy bugs with his PhD. He is also a team member of several projects that try to help Guinea-Bissau cashew farmers to better cope with climate change, including emerging insect pests. Nowadays he spends his days on his startup, The Cricket Farming Co, that develops new technologies to produce and generate ingredients for food from crickets. He is also a founding member of the Portugal Chapter of The Explorer's Club, a non-profit dedicated to advancing field research, scientific exploration, and promoting innovative expeditions.
