Did you know your hobby has a history?A long and surprisingly rich one. Join the Osgoode Township Museum on May 26 as we explore the story of knitting in rural Ottawa from 1827 to 1976.

Through objects from the museum’s collection, you’ll discover how knitting shaped everyday life, connecting people to work, income, community, and even wartime efforts.

From evolving techniques and patterns to “knitting for money” and rural economies, this talk reveals how something as simple as yarn and needles carried real social and economic weight.

🧶 And if you knit, crochet, or do needlework, feel free to bring your project and craft during the lecture.

Holly Benison is the Program's Coordinator at The Osgoode Township Museum, located in rural South Ottawa on the traditional unceeded ancestral land of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people. The museum opened in 1973 and tells the story of the people and heritage of Osgoode Township and the role that rural heritage plays in the life of our city. Collections-based programming, reenacting studies, social and culinary history all inform Benison's practice in developing programs at the site. The museum is open year-round.
