Covid-19: Please note that we have implemented new work practices to keep everyone safe. When you arrive, you will have to queue outside. You will be allowed in one at a time and given time to take your seat. Please bring a mask. A clean apron and towel as well as some latex gloves if you would prefer to use them will be provided. You will have to sanitise your hands. The teachers will be wearing masks. We are not able to socially distance so we have installed cough screens in between each wheel. There will be one to one contact with the teachers through your hands as that is how pottery is taught. The teachers will sanitise their hands before making contact. At the end of the class you will leave one by one as you came in.
Please note that you are required to wear a mask in the studio. If you are exempt please get in touch with us before the course starts. If you have been abroad 14 days before any of the classes you will have to miss the class.
PREGNANCY: Please note that this course is not suitable for pregnant women as there are health implications.
The course structure is as follows:
1. Centring and making basic pots: Centring is the most difficult thing to master when learning to throw on the wheel. It is what keeps a pot symmetrical. But everyone learns at different rates and the important thing to realise is that you will learn to do it. The first session is really just learning the technique.
2. Centring and drawing up clay: Again, working on the centring and how the clay is drawn up. A common problem is that people draw up too quickly losing their centring or even collapsing their pot. This session helps with pressures and speed.
3. Centring and making bowls: During this session you will continue with mastering your centring and getting more control of the shapes you are making. We will look at rounded bowls and open bowls. You will also learn to turn bases.
4. Making small cylinders and turning bases: During this session you will learn how to make small cylinders. You will also continue to turn bases.
5. Pulling handles, turning bases and, if time allows, some more throwing: During this session you will learn to pull and attach handles to the cylinders you threw the previous week as well as turn any bases left to do.
6. Throwing and turning practice. Looking to improve your technique.
7. Finishing off all previous work. Throwing a basic plate on a batt.
8. Glaze all work: Generally I allow work to dry for about 8-10 days before firing (which takes 2 days). The last session can be taken during one of the open sessions on a Wednesday evening or a Saturday morning.
Some classes are easier to miss than the others. If you do miss a session you may be able to do a catch up on a Saturday morning but please note that there is a charge of £50 for this. If you miss a class due to having to self-isolating and want to make it up please note that we unfortunately do have to charge for this. If you develop Covid unfortunately we cannot make-up any classes free of charge.
